About

In March 2025, I began working with Herma Deenen, a visual artist and printmaker based in Amsterdam. Through organizing a skill learning session every week, we experimented with our curiosities in different methods of printmaking. This project was made possible by the financial support of Amarte Fonds

Carborundum printing technique in combination with drypoint
Through mixing carborundum powder and wood glue, you can make a paste to draw with, which gives significantly stronger and deeper color expression. This is due to the particles of carborundum powder that densely hold the ink.

With Herma, we made the white ground paste from scratch using soap, zinc white oil paint, and water. It is expected to bring out a subtle and painterly effect by using the white ground.

Before and after the zinc plate with white ground submerged into the acid bath

The printed result on paper

Spitbite; A method that just directly draws with the acid solution, instead of putting the whole plate into the acid bath. I covered some parts of the plate with plastic tape to test if it would remain unetched.

The tape did protect the plate quite well from the acid !

Ink on; will be ready to print after removing the excess amount of ink. I did like the look of the plate itself, more than the first test print result on paper.

More work in process, experimentation made in 2025

From the end of September until the 4th of October, 2025,
I’ll be having an exhibition at de Bouwput, Amsterdam, to share what I have been making, failing, and exploring with. There will be more detailed information regarding this very soon.
Would be great to see you there, whoever visiting this website :)
